Anti-wrinkle injections contain a purified protein that relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles, helping to create a smoother, rejuvenated and more youthful appearance. Anti-wrinkle injections are also known as muscle relaxants as they primarily work by reducing contractions of the muscles which form lines in the skin overlying them.

As you age, your skin loses collagen and elastin in skin which results in two kinds of wrinkles, static and dynamic.

Static wrinkles are the lines that can be seen when your race is at rest, therefore they are constantly noticeable. These lines are a result of natural collagen and elasticity loss with age.

Dynamic wrinkles are different because they only appear when your face is animated or expressive. These facial lines occur when we make repeated facial expressions that contract certain muscles such as when we smile, laugh or frown and may give an unwanted appearance of anger, sadness, tiredness or anxiety. With time, these expression lines deepen over the forehead, eyes and nose areas. The anti-wrinkle injections relax the muscular contractions which cause dynamic wrinkles by blocking the nerve impulses to these muscles.

By relaxing the underlying muscles, the appearances of lines will refine and reduce the lines resulting in a more refreshed, youthful look.

Facial lines are caused by the repeated creasing of the skin by the underlying muscles of facial expression. Anti-wrinkle injections are one of the most popular cosmetic treatments available and are commonly used to treat the following areas and medical problems:

  • Forehead wrinkles (the horizontal lines across the forehead)
  • Frown lines (the vertical lines or furrows between the eyebrows)
  • Crow’s feet (lines around the sides of the eyes)
  • Bunny lines (lines along the sides of the nose)
  • Lipstick lines / Smokers’ lines (vertical lip lines)
  • Gummy lines (showing an excessive amount of upper gum when you smile)
  • Smile lines / Marionette lines (lines on the sides of the mouth down to the jaw line.
  • Neck lines (vertical neck lines between your chin and collar bone) to give you the “Nefertiti lift”
  • Droopy eyebrows – to give you an Eyebrow lift
  • Jawline slimming
  • Chin dimpling

Medical uses:

  • Migraines to the forehead area
  • Tension headaches
  • Bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating of armpits)

Anti-wrinkle injections are regarded as being very safe and have been used to treat tens of millions of patients worldwide for nearly three decades and there have been no known increases in long term side-effects. In Australia, the TGA (Therapeutic Goods Administration) approved the use of Botulinum Toxin in 2002 as an anti-wrinkle injection for cosmetic use. There
has been extensive research and testing on anti-wrinkle injections to ensure it is both safe and effective for users.

The injections have been used by doctors for many medical conditions including muscle spasticity and spasms, migraines, bladder and gynaecological conditions, voice disorders, teeth
grinding and temporo-mandibular disorders and excessive sweating.

Anti-wrinkle injections have a very small risk of causing a temporary weakness in nearby muscles that may cause a slight and temporary drooping, such as in an eyelid or eyebrow potentially lasting 1 to 6 weeks. This drooping can occur in approximately 1 in 500 to 1000 cases.

Anti-wrinkle injections should not be administered to anyone under 18 years of age, pregnant or breastfeeding women or patients with neuromuscular disorders such as myasthenia gravis or Eaton-Lambert syndrome.

Anti-wrinkle treatments are an effective procedure with minimal down time. While there may be some stinging or a pricking sensation felt at the injection site, the procedure causes minimal discomfort and the sensation is typically short and over before you know it. Sometimes there may be very minor bruising and tenderness in the 24 hours after the treatment but there is no ongoing pain or discomfort.

If the forehead is treated, you may experience a mild headache. This is usually mild and can be managed by Paracetamol or Ibuprofen. Our aim is to make your treatment as comfortable as possible. Should you need a little distraction, we have our hand squeeze balls for you to use and there is our ‘gold bar’ which is placed near the treatment area to help distract you from the injection.

Well known as a “lunchtime procedure”, most people can return to work straight after a treatment and you can resume normal activities shortly afterwards.

Anti-wrinkle injection results may start to show an effect in 3 to 7 days, but will generally take 2 weeks for you to see the full effect of a treatment.

At True Edge Medical, we will reassess your results after two weeks at your follow-up appointment. Your follow-up appointment is an important part of your journey. It is
complementary and includes any ‘top-up’ products you may need.

Anti-wrinkle Injection effects are temporary, lasting on average three to four months, in some people it may last up to six months. With repeated treatments, the muscle thins or wastes
(atrophies) and this can extend the overall duration of the effect by the product.

The effect of the product will wear off over time and the wrinkles/lines will return if no repeat injections are done. Therefore, it is advisable not to allow the effect to completely wear off so the muscle does not return to its original strength. At True Edge Medical, your individual treatment plan will be developed to maximise your desired aesthetic goals.

Whilst there is minimal to no down time with anti-wrinkle treatments, after any medical procedure, self-care is very important.

We recommend the following post procedure care:

Generally, it is important to keep the area of skin clean, try to avoid heavy creams and makeup while the skin is healing. You may apply cold packs to relieve any localised discomfort.

Some more specific instructions for the 24 hours after each treatment include:

  • No facials or face massages
  • Sleep on your back for the first few nights and try your best not to sleep on the treated area
  • Avoid touching, rubbing or applying any pressure on the treated area
  • Avoid vigorous exercise
  • Avoid applying make-up
  • Avoid steams baths & saunas
  • Avoid aspirin or Ibuprofen as this may promote bruising. Paracetamol is recommended for any discomfort.
  • Do not use AHAs, BHAs, Retinol, or Vitamin C on the treated areas
  • Do not rub or massage the treated areas
  • Do not consume alcohol, to avoid thinning the blood as this may promote redness and bruising
  • For 2 weeks following the procedure, avoid laser treatments, microdermabrasion and chemical peels
Should you experience any eyelid drooping, change in voice, difficulty swallowing, contact us immediately or ring your medical doctor for care.
